  • A Brief History of Tarot

The Tarot is a language of images and divination, whisperer of images that open doors and windows for serious seekers of full, rich lives. It is a complex yet simple interpretation of the Journey into the Path of Evolution. It corresponds beautifully with the concept of the hero's and heroin's journey toward wholeness. The Tarot is a mystery. Sometimes, it seems the deeper implications, symbols and wisdom of Tarot are lost, yet that is not so. The Tarot is ancient. We don't know it's exact origin, although it resurfaced in the 14th and 15th century in notable ways. Tarot decks were used from at least the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play Italian, French and German games of chance. Even today, versions of these early decks are still used in Europe to play games of chance. Throughout time, Tarot has been connected to playing cards and thought of as a game, possibly to disguise the true virtue of its wisdom. Tarot has been recognized as a work of art; a secret document, and, as an historical treatise on the origins of human consciousness. The complete Tarot deck consists of 78 cards. These include 22 Major Arcana Cards, 40 Minor Cards and 16 Court Cards. The 4 suits of the Tarot deck represent the elements: Air (Swords), Fire (Wands), Water (Cups), Earth (Pentacles). Though a Spanish deck of cards from 1450 may have been the earliest Tarot deck used for divination, it is generally thought that, for the purposes of divination, Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteila) was the first to produce a Tarot deck in 1789. The deck’s themes related to the Gods, Goddesses and Familiars of ancient Egypt. The initiates of Egypt were said to master insight and consciousness in what was called The Hall of Mirrors. An Initiate would study and connect with particular deities and gods as a means to discover the implications of those characteristics within themselves. Today as well, the Tarot deck serves as a Hall of Mirrors for initiates. We discover liberation and awakening within the 22 cards that are known as the Major Arcana (The Greater Mysteries). Aleister Crowley, who devised the Thoth deck with Lady Frieda Harris, said of the tarot: "The origin of this pack of cards is very obscure. Some authorities seek to put it back as far as the ancient Egyptian Mysteries; others try to bring it forward as late as the fifteenth or even the sixteenth century...[but] The only theory of ultimate interest about the Tarot is that it is an admirable symbolic picture of the Universe, based on the data of the Holy Qbalah."

  • Archetypes: Body, Spirit, Soul

What are archetypes? What role do they play in alchemy and tarot? Archetypes are things we individually or collectively agree on. There are archetypes of the body, spirit and soul. Archetypes of the body include Goddesses and Gods, saints and masters, teachers and healers. Venus, Gilgamesh, Brigid, Odysseus, Luke Skywalker, Frodo Baggins, Jesus, Muhammed and the Buddha are all examples of archetypes of the body, and the spirits of all are recognizable in alchemy and tarot. Archetypes of the spirit include philosophy, cosmology and religion. The Philosophy Foundation offers this short definition of philosophy and its practice: "Philosophy is a way of thinking about certain subjects such as ethics, thought, existence, time, meaning and value. That 'way of thinking' involves 4 Rs: responsiveness, reflection, reason and re-evaluation. The aim is to deepen understanding. The hope is that by doing philosophy we learn to think better, to act more wisely, and thereby help to improve the quality of all our lives." Every culture develops systems of thought that lead to better understanding oneself and the world. Cosmology is a system of beliefs that seeks to describe or explain the origin and structure of the universe. We find this practice throughout alchemy and tarot. Religion is most often defined a set of organized beliefs, practices, and systems relating to belief and worship of a controlling force such as a personal god or another supernatural power. Archetypes of the soul include prayer, practices of meditation, and All-Seeing experiences. These archetypes are in many ways more deeply personal, yet all of these archetypes bind humans to each other in the pursuit of greater knowledge and self-awareness. Alchemy and tarot navigate inquiry that brings us ever closer to revelation and the truth. Lao-Tu said, ''The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.'' In Joseph Campbell’s teaching of the hero’s journey the author identified three main phases in the monolith: departure, initiation and return. All humans who seek knowledge, answers and truth participate in this cyclical adventure of body, spirit and soul. It's why alchemy and tarot still resonate after thousands of years. They help us better understand archetypes and he very real ways they play defining roles in our individual stories. • Philosophy of Tarot & Alchemy

People are hungry and thirsty, not just for food and water, but also for the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. The ancient Greeks learned that φιλοσοφία, philosophia, literally "love of wisdom,” is the study of general and fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. The goal of any philosophy is to discover the meaning of life: Thine own self be true, know thyself, heal thyself. A valuable resource for philosophical study, the tarot deck, was created as a tool to help people explore and make sense of this vast body of knowledge. Ancestor to modern playing cards, this pictorial masterpiece has been described as a game, a fortune telling device, a work of art, a secret doctrine, and ultimately, a mirror of human consciousness. Alchemy, a widely practiced ancient philosophy that is the predecessor of modern chemistry, is deeply Present in the tarot deck, Alchemy is focused on chrysopeia, the transmutation of base metals such as lead into "noble metals" (particularly gold), the creation of an elixir of immortality, and the creation of panaceas able to cure disease. The perfection of the human body and soul was thought to result from the alchemical magnum opus ("Great Work"). Alchemical elements in the tarot deck include The Moist Heaven ~ The Feminine ~ Birth ~ Imprinting; Air (swords/Mental) ~ Water (cups/Heart) ~ Fire (Wands/Creative) ~ Earth (Crystals ~ Pentacles ~ Material World) Quintessence, the fifth and highest element in ancient and medieval philosophy, is the goal of all inquiry. Quintessence is the most perfect example of a quality—any quality. • Epi-Genetics and Flower Essences (Part 2)

The epigenome is a portion of our DNA differentiated from the genetic code: and unlike other portions of DNA, the epigenome has the ability to mutate throughout one’s lifetime. This topic is widely researched scientifically as well as in the metaphysical world. The research into genetics is helping us to understand the behaviors’ and addicted patterning thought to be static within the DNA structure of the individual. The study of the epigenome is most commonly known as the study of epi-genetics. The Greek prefix- epi in Epigenetics implies features that are “on top of” or “in addition to” genetics; thus Epigenetic traits exist on top of or in addition to the molecular basis for inheritance. It’s only by viewing the body as a multi-dimensional energy system that we begin to approach how the soul manifests through molecular biology. Vibrational medicine is one of the first scientific approaches seeking to integrate science and spirituality. Vibrational medicine is one of the first scientific approaches seeking to integrate science and spirituality. The study of epigenetic can cue us into a deeper understanding of our own physical and spiritual existence due to the fact that the epigenome has been demonstrated to change throughout an individual’s lifetime, and has been discovered through research to be affected by positive and negative experiences. The fact that epi-genetic processes are continuously at work and changing indicate that the evolutionary process is in constant motion while we are alive and that we have an exciting part to play in the destiny of our health and destiny. Progressive research suggests energy imprint, inherited emotions, thought forms, fears, and the behaviors of an individual may be passed down through our ancestral lineage including past lives. A Nova program entitled Ghost in Your Genes, defines epi-genetics as “a kind of ‘second genome’ that, along with other major factors, account for the surprising differences that can accumulate over time in identical twins. Even though exact DNA is shared, scientists have long puzzled over the different fate of their health and lifestyle. We are discovering there is much more than birth genetics that determines who we are and we now know that there is a network of chemicals that switch genes off and on, collectively referred to as the epigenome. The switches appear to play a major role in everything from how our cells keep their identity to whether we contract disease. Epi-genetic switches may also mold our personalities, or so it appears to Canadian researchers studying a group of epigenetically modified rats. From these studies surface scientific evidence that actions, thoughts, and learning systems can slowly Change the DNA Template.

We carry the Laws of Universal Order within our own body. Alan Watts, the great philosopher quoted; "The Earth is peopling, as apple trees 'apple'." I love that. May our collaborations with nature enrich the fabric of life, and to quote Joseph Campbell, "We are the sensing organs of the Earth. We are the senses of the universe." In similar reverie the blossoming flowers, the beautiful blue sky, and the flight of birds, mirror the grandeur of life. Let’s never forget or ignore the wisdom offered from our greatest teacher; The world of Nature, the Beauty of Earth.

  • The 7 Chakras and the Human Body

In my work as an astrologer, flower essence practitioner, tarot consultant and author, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with thousands of clients across the globe. In doing this work the ‘embodiment principle’ has been paramount assisting individuals to retrieve a safe home within the body, the temple of the soul. Within this precious temple exists an intricate human design consisting of layer upon layer of karmic imprints, memory, cellular DNA, family origins, and an extraordinary energy system know as Chi, or, the Universal Field of Light. This magnetic flow of vital-force feeds all aspects of body, mind, spirit, and soul, and in my work I’ve worked with various aspects of Universal Energy and Vibrational Healing, particularly flower essences. In this article I want to discuss Chakras and the Human Body. In part two I will add the flower essence associated to each chakra. The chakras appear in many wisdom traditions, but have been studied most intensely in the schools of yoga and tantra. More and more people are becoming aware of the existence of these sacred healing centers and the life force inextricably linked with them. The is life force-known by many names such as Prana, Chi, Holy Spirit, Kundalini, Manna, Tao, and Body Matrix-can be worked with and cared for just like any other part of the human body. As we align with this energy, our relationships with life, nature, and our bodies improve. Ancient depictions of the chakra system show the life force in the form of a coiled serpent at the base of the spine. Various yogic techniques and exercises help practitioners to activate this potent spiritual energy. The seven chakras are located along the central channel corresponding to the spine in the physical body. This energetic pathway is also known as the ‘Rainbow Bridge’, a living link between Heaven and Earth. The martial art known as Tai Chi means, rainbow energy, and assists one to harmonize the entire body and fill it with Living Light. The seven chakras move upward throughout the body in the color sequence of the rainbow. Each of the seven chakras is associated with a particular organ of the body, creativity, emotion, spiritual energy, and Chi. I will also connect each chakra to its Sanskrit name and meaning, an element, and certain sensory as well as psychological functions of the individual. I’ve connected various flower essences to each vital chakra for healing purposes. See our 7 Chakra Blends in out shop to learn more. First Chakra: Located at the base of the spine and the back of the knees. • Geometric Poetry of the Human Soul

There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres. ~ Pythagoras Sunrise to sunset, flowers adorn our planet in a multitude of ways, and the subtle nature of their exquisite beauty is an eternal blessing to humanity. Even if you lived in a cave, and never actually saw a flower, they would still wrap you in their loving embrace, for the essence of flowers permeates the earth within and without. There are so many ways to engage with flowers, be it a stroll in the garden, a floral painting on the wall, scented oil from the blossoms, a bouquet of freshly picked flowers, or a vibrational remedy. We have the option of going to the flowers in any way we choose. My truest love, aside from the mere presence of the flowers themselves, is applying flower essence therapy. After twenty years of working with the elixirs, it is no longer about believing in them or proving that they work; I know them for the powerful healers they are. I know them as geometric poetry of the human soul. Each flower holds a specific healing pattern that is a miniature holographic universe of its own. The primary purpose of the Power of Flowers remedies and cards is to invite us to relate with nature more intimately through the practical application of flower essences. It is very important for people to understand that this is not a complicated science set aside for a gifted minority of mystically minded pioneers. The essences are here for all of humanity, rich or poor, and all color and creed. Edward Bach offered us a peek into the eternal medicine bag of nature, the plants themselves, asserting over and over again that the natural world speaks a language of harmony and goodwill for all of humankind. Bach wrote, "Once we realize our own Divinity the rest is easy." Flower essences address the conditions of both our spiritual and mortal bodies. If there is discord, disease will follow. Disease is the soul's way of addressing imbalance. For example, negative emotions, such as fear and anger, create rigidity and disharmony in the body and these unhealthy constructs can eventually turn into physical disease. Flower essence therapy addresses the mental states within us that distort the soul's spiritual journey. Flower essences, working in the sacred space between body and soul, wash away our impurities, and anchor the soul in the rich new soil of encouragement and hope. All people are invited to use flower essences in their everyday life in order to prevent and cure disease. We are all healers, graced with the virtues of love and compassion. It is the work of our souls to draw this force forward so as to be in service to one another. There are times, however, when a professional in the art of flower essence diagnoses flowers with great skill. One practitioner may use methods such as muscle testing and hypnotherapy to diagnose flowers, while another may use a pendulum. The most important tool of all, of course, is Love.

  • The Art and Science of Astrology

We live in a universe that is teaming with life, intelligence, consciousness, and intrinsic order. The configurations of the celestial bodies at the moment of birth reflect a pattern of cosmic thought that initiates the span of a human life and points the direction towards that which the life is headed. The end result is implicit in the beginning moment, as the oak tree is to the acorn. To the extent that we recognize and live out this innate purpose as an expression of our authentic self, despite the mixture of happiness and suffering that characterizes what it entails to be human, we acknowledge and fulfill the reason for our existence. Astrology provides a map that guides us towards our unique destination and gives the timing for each stage in our life journey. Having given astrological consultations for forty years, I can honestly say, without doubt, that YES, the astrological natal chart is an empowered tool for self-realization and growth. If you were to ask me if I ‘believe’ in astrology I would say no. Instead, I ‘know’ astrology. Until one has truly studied, researched and worked with the art and science of astrology, the unique and personal attributes of the nature of astrology will not be known. I’m honored to be one of many astrologers in the world working with the aesthetics of this art, maintaining a reverent and integral approach to its ongoing research and interpretation. An astrological natal birth chart combines an array of mythic archetypes and depth psychology aimed towards inner healing. We are given techniques to understand specific timing and practical suggestions to help navigate one through the many cycles of living. A chart is like a seed that gives the genetic code for the growth of certain kind of life form. Our authentic self is the maturation of that seed. The range of our human choice is ideally how to become the best and finest expression of the life that our chart is constructed to support. It’s an honor to work with each individual as they progress and advance within the living code of this lifetime.

  • Energy Medicine and Healing with Nature

Emotional energy is the source of our creative center. Without a healthy emotional core, it’s difficult to access the source of purpose, sustainability or destiny. In a today’s turbulent world, we often push ourselves to extremes, causing burn-out, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, compromised immune systems and illness. We’ve got to understand how our health, in current times, depends on new paradigms of healing, new daily health practices and a revival that extends into vibrational healing. Our bodies are a living, breathing kaleidoscope, connecting multiple links between stars and plants. This universal template is a divine mirror between the co-creative forces of Humanity and Nature; ethereal yet grounded, a magic mirror of life. “Health depends on being in harmony with our souls.” ~ Edward Bach We are swimming in an energy field, an ancestral energy field holding fourteen generations of events that took place in our blood lines. Before we were born into this material realm, our embryonic selves floated within fluids of the womb, the waters of life. Advance scientific research in genetics and epi-genetics and DNA science reveal evidence that we are influenced by this genetic code. Our reactions, emotions, and unconscious behaviors are governed equally by our generational influences, environment, and karmic patterns. Family members may each have their own unique patterning and DNA factors. The design of a human embryo is a spiral pattern, an evolutionary signature at the core of all life beginning sea creatures, shells, rocks, plants and flowers. The interconnection indicates a fundamental unity with the cosmos and the Milky Way; a spiral of multitudes of stars and planets. Our very natures are interdependent on this source of life, a greater mystery, and a vibrational energy we call Human Incarnation. “Humans have a soul which is their real higher self; a Divine, Mighty, Being. --Edward Bach We are indeed a human tribe. Together our bodies carry variable emotions, experiences, and memories. For centuries, human consciousness has been explored through the design of the human body. Ancient cultures considered the body a microcosm of the universe, where body organs were connected to planets; meridians represented connecting lines of energy flow and the mystical and science were interconnected, not alienated from each other. Today, however, a chasm interferes with the flow of universal oneness. The energy between matter (physical) and energy (vibrational) was separated. Connectivity was shattered and a new paradigm of logic swept human consciousness. A great error occurred as humanity became more and more separated from nature, the living intelligence of ancestry, and most importantly, we became increasingly estranged from the Life of the Soul. Yet, layers of history repeat themselves and with the great work of Edward Bach in the early 1900’s a retrieval of vibrational medicine was restored in western medicine. Edward Bach, a medical doctor whose aim it was to restore health that involved the subtle energies of emotional blocks and mental belief patterns. Bach’s study from the works of Paracelsus, an alchemist of the 14th and 15th centuries, discovered a modality of healing that would address the maladies of human imbalance and illness. His research and experimentation with alchemical plant medicine brought forth an essential aspect of vibrational medicine today, the benefits of flower Essence Therapy and plant medicine. We are indebted to Bach’s tireless work and dedication as he resurrected interconnectivity between the design of plant material and human genetics. He found that flowers, as medicine, could serve as a vibrational remedy for the many ailments that plague humanity. By imprinting a flower’s signature within water, the imprint of the flower’s mandala design would enter the stream or deep-seated patterning of the individual, thereby releasing and freeing one from the imbalances of restrictive mental, emotional, and spiritual constructs. A marriage between nature and all living beings had been brought to light on a vibrational level once again. Flower Essences are widely used as a companion to healing methods today. “The art of healing comes from nature, not from the physician. Therefore, the physician must start from nature, with an open mind.” ~ Paracelsus

  • The Soul of Nature: Early Alchemy

The following is an excerpt from Isha Lerner's book: Power of Flowers. Astrologers, those who have studied the stars, and herbalists, those who have studied the plants, have ever been seeking those remedies which will help us to keep our health and joy. ~Edward Beach The entire natural world, including the world of human beings, is engaged in the alchemical process of spiritual transmutation. Therefore, flowers – both in the form of essences and of artistic renderings – are perhaps its greatest ally. The Ancient Art Of Alchemy Is Almost As Old As Civilization Itself! At the esoteric level, western alchemists, in their quest for spiritual perfection, developed a tradition of "cosmic magic." It can be traced as far back as the 4th century B.C.E. (Before the Common Era), extending deep into the mystery of Thoth, the Egyptian god of mathematics and science. It is interesting to note that in the Eastern world of approximately the same time period, Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist yogis were engaged in highly esoteric, alchemical experimentation, as well. In the Hindu and Buddhist context, these secret practices are commonly known as tantra. At a more mundane level, western alchemical theory is based on the notion that the material world, despite its great diversity of form, can be reduced to a single, primary substance. This substance, known as prima materia, or primal, chaotic matter, ultimately consists of 4 basic elements: air, fire, water, earth. It was further believed that certain transmuting agents, themselves made up of these four basic elements, were capable of changing one material into another. In this context, alchemy was understood as the art of transmuting base materials into more refined materials through a process of freeing the original base materials from their "impurities." This notion became known as "the philosopher's stone,” the most recognized of all alchemical ideas. Perhaps Paraselsus described this alchemical movement toward purity and perfection best when he said: Nature...does not produce anything that is perfection. Humanity must bring things to perfection. The work of bringing things to perfection is called "Alchemy" and he is an alchemist who carries what nature grows for the use of humanity to its destined end. Alchemists Of Ancient Times Were Not Yet Burdened By The Artificial Distinction Between Science And The Occult. In this sense, they were at a decided advantage over modern day seekers of perfection. The observable world of nature and the invisible, unconscious world of the psyche were not yet dualistically set apart, allowing for a holistic approach to inner and outer realities. In a world of whole things, one was more apt to discover whole truths. The minds of antiquity were more fluid; imaginations more fertile, giving rise to fanciful visions and elaborate excursions into overlapping philosophical, psychological, and religious domains. Steeped in a profound and direct experience of the mystical union of matter and spirit, all material forms were recognized as ultimately changeable and transmutable. The Contribution Made To Both Mystical And Scientific Enterprises By Early Alchemists Cannot Be Overstated. They understood the elemental healing properties of various plants, flowers, and chemicals, and were, consequently, able to formulate many powerful elixirs and potions – including the herbal concoctions used in the Egyptian mummification process, as well as those used in African shamanic healing and visionary journeys. Ultimately, their greatest achievement was their exploration of the dark, mysterious, unconscious aspects of nature and humanity. Through this journey, the early alchemists managed a blend of the exotic, the scientific, the esoteric, and the mudane.
